Play now: Planets & Survival Foundations introduces Space Engineers 2 with its first fully playable survival slice, where in the current Alpha you can land and build on Verdure and Kemik, explore handcrafted biomes with caves, overhangs, cliffs, and volumetric clouds, carve landing zones, dig tunnels, mine rock, and fell trees, with terrain, trees, asteroids, and structures all fully destructible.
You play the first layer of survival, managing power, hydrogen, and health while exploring and building, setting up a basic production chain using the Smelter, Fabricator, and Gearforge, crafting better tools, and keeping your engineer alive on harsh worlds. Projection and Backpack Building allow placing holographic projections of ships, rovers, and bases, then welding them directly from ore using your backpack, iterating on designs quickly with mirroring, copy/paste, blueprints, and grid undo/redo. You can start colonizing the Almagest system using the Colonization Map to unlock sectors, accept contracts, grow influence, and begin the story of brothers Miro and Ivan Sokol, or build freely in Creative Mode by switching into pure sandbox with the unified 25 cm grid, powerful building tools, advanced destruction, and full modding support through the VRAGE3 Mod HUB and Steam Workshop. The Alpha stage includes foundational survival, contracts, colonization, and story, with ongoing changes adding new mechanics, balance passes, and content with each major update.
The roadmap shows development through Vertical Slices, with VS1 delivering Creative and Building features including the unified grid, advanced building tools, improved controls, and UI; VS1.5 introducing UGC and Modding through VRAGE3 Mod HUB, Mod Editor, and full Steam Workshop support; and VS2 presenting Planets and Survival Foundations with Verdure and Kemik planets, early survival systems, Colonization Map, contracts, and Projection & Backpack Building. In development are VS2.2 Survival Extensions with more survival depth, mechanical blocks and subgrids, weapons, ship tools, full GPS, and deeper colonization gameplay; VS3 Water and the Byblos water planet with planetary scale volumetric water and water focused gameplay; VS4 NPCs and Co-op with 4 player cooperative survival and interactive NPCs; and VS5 Full Multiplayer and Campaign with large scale multiplayer and a long form survival campaign in the Almagest system.
Early Access is planned to continue into 2027, with purchases supporting development and allowing players to shape the game with feedback. Players can jump in now to enjoy building and experimenting in evolving systems, playing with planets and the first layer of survival and colonization, while those preferring to wait can wishlist and follow for the full package including deeper survival, water, NPCs, co-op, large scale multiplayer, and the complete campaign.
Space Engineers 2 is a sandbox about engineering and colonization where you build ships, stations, and planetary bases in a fully destructible world, following the story of Miro and Ivan Sokol as humanity expands in the Almagest system, arriving with a damaged ship, basic tools, and beautiful but unforgiving planets, exploring and colonizing the system, mining resources, constructing bases and starships, completing contracts, and pushing the frontier forward alone or later with friends in co-op and large scale multiplayer over the course of Early Access.
